Want to scare your customers? Here’s how.

Halloween is the time for a good scare, but for customers, some of the most frightening experiences have nothing to do with ghosts or monsters.

Here are three things that can quickly turn an ordinary customer experience into a nightmare.

1. The vanishing act
A customer gets in touch with a question or issue, only to hear nothing back. No one enjoys being left in the dark, especially when something has gone wrong.

The lesson: Keep customers informed, even when you don’t have an immediate answer. A simple update can go a long way.

2. The never-ending maze
Confusing websites, repeated transfers between departments, and difficulty finding the right person to speak to can leave customers going round in circles. What should be a simple task becomes unnecessarily complicated.

The lesson: Make it easy for customers to get what they need. Review your processes regularly to understand common issues and remove unnecessary steps.

3. The unexpected surprise
Hidden charges, missed deadlines, or broken promises. Surprises can be fun at Halloween, but they’re often unwelcome when someone is dealing with a business.

The lesson: Be clear about what customers can expect and ensure you can deliver on those expectations.

    The real fright?
None of these experiences are particularly unusual, and that’s perhaps the most worrying part. Small frustrations often go unnoticed or become accepted internally, even when they have a real impact on customers.

At W5, we help organisations uncover these issues, understand their impact, and identify opportunities to improve the customer experience.

So perhaps this Halloween it’s worth asking, “Are we giving our customers any unnecessary frights?”

After all, the best customer experiences don’t need tricks. Just a little more thought and attention.
